Los Angeles homicide detective Fran Anders gets called to investigate a hit-and-run, but when incriminating photographs arrive at the precinct, it sure looks like murder . . .

Fran's latest case throws her into the lives of Mike and Alisa Jepson, a couple whose marriage is disintegrating fast.

When leads coming in that point at Mike Jepson, local businessman, as guilty of murder, Fran watches the damage wrought on this couple, yet is unable to ignore the evidence.

Fran is a dedicated, no-frills cop who takes her job seriously but with a wry sense of humor. She suffers from the unbearable heat, from unrelenting allergies, but does not suffer fools. As much as she wants to please her superiors, she knows her true boss is—God—and she answers first and foremost to his leading, which sometimes takes her beyond the call of duty, often to the ire of those around her. A middle-aged, divorced single parent with two teens, Fran hopes someday to find a great man and remarry, but she’s not holding her breath. Right now, she just wants to be a good cop and mother and use her faith to help those she encounters in her line of work learn there’s someone “up there” who truly cares for them.

The Jepson case seems cut-and-dried, and though her workload is heavy, she manages to keep her plates spinning. However, When Mike ends up arrested and in jail, and Fran's teenage son is accused of hacking into the school's computer to alter grades, Fran's faith in God, in her adequacy as a mother and a cop, and in herself is put to the test.

Mike's wife, Alisa, had long ago turned her back on God. But when her life cracks and shatters, she is set adrift. She wants to believe Mike is innocent, but how can she?

Mike, panicky and desperate to prove his innocence and find his nemesis, hires a PI who uncovers clues as to who is setting Mike up, but Alisa becomes caught in a dangerous trap before Mike can protect her.

Although Fran reaches out to Alisa during her crisis of faith, she is unable to stop events from barreling toward a crash. Yet, despite the tragedies to follow, Fran sees how God has used the Jepsons’ trials and pain to bring Alisa back into His arms, with hope that Mike might follow suit.

This faith-based crime story explores the pain and unhappiness that comes from being alienated from God, but also shows how much God cares and wants his lost to come home.

Here are what readers say about A Thin Film of Lies

"Lakin knows how to cook up a tasty story, laden fat with calories of deceit, betrayal, and unexpected twists. In the end, the author gives us something even more valuable than a great read hope." —Harry Kraus, bestselling author of A Heartbeat Away.

"From start to finish A Thin Film of Lies had me turning pages long after the sun went down. It's truly a rare gem—a mystery/crime novel with a Christian theme entwined. This 'whodunit' is the total package murder, suspense, accusations, betrayal and ultimately redemption. Just when you think you have it figured out and think you know who it is, you don't!"

"With each turn of the page, I read as she unveiled her story and the pieces fell together. The final product was so beautifully written. The ending was very unexpected and yet perfect! If you enjoy mysteries, or crime scene detective shows this book is definitely for you!"

"Let me be clear. If you pick up this book you will not simply peruse. Your life will be in a paused state until you reach the last page. It's just that good."

"A great plot, really excellent character development and a good pace. I was apprehensive because it's about someone being framed for murder. I usually don't read those types of books because I get so frustrated! But she did a good job of building the suspense, then moving on to the accused hiring a private detective who helps break the case. And the ending? Absolutely genius!

I've always been a mystery fan and grew up on Ross MacDonald, Robert Parker and the great John D. MacDonald. Although Ms. Larkin has a different style than those masters, and the book has a few flaws, this is a solid mystery. Homicide detective Fran investigates a hit and run murder that brings her into the lives of married couple Mike and Alisa. Mike comes under suspicion, which doesn't make a shaky marriage any better. While Fran investigates the case and the reader watches the couple deal with some serious issues, the author makes some points about God and faith. John MacDonald's series hero Travis McGee was one of the finest characters in mystery fiction, a truly three-dimensional man. Lew Archer, Ross MacDonald's detective was so thin you could, in the author's words if I recall, "slip him under a door." the characters here are not as solid as McGee but they do become real and the reader is interested in the outcome. the prose is above average. All in all, a fine performance by the author.

A Thin Film of Lies C S Lakin 9781521084397 Books Reviews

The different stories weaving in kept me guessing who was the innocent party and how this could be resolved. The characters were very believable and the author did an excellent job of describing their true personalities.
A Thin Film of Lies delivers an enthralling read. While it took me awhile to get into it, once the story got going I couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened. The main characters and the twists their lives took kept me guessing, and the ending took me completely by surprise. This is a very enjoyable, entertaining book in the Christian mystery genre.
Eleven ladies attended our Christian Book Club meeting when I presented the book to the members. Everyone really enjoyed the story line which held our interest. One of the ladies found the story to be predicable, I, for one, took longer for things to begin to fall into place in my mind. Everyone agreed that the story was a page turner. This may be the only time every one was in agreement on liking any of the books we have read during the last two years. Also, another member who was unable to attend the meeting, but read the book gave the book high ratings.
If you like suspense and crime novels, this book is a great Christian option to that genre. Still packed with the crime and action, we see a police woman who follows God, and listens to his nudge. No, He doesn't help her solve cases, but His presence is presented true to live in his still small voice to follow Him.

Full of intrigue this not only a "who-done-it," it is a "why did they do it" that keeps you wondering how it will end. A fun summer read for the beach, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
There are 3 main characters in my opinion. A couple and the police investigator. The story is about a couple whose marriage falls off track. The husband is accused of having an affair and murder. The wife is taken advantage of. The cop is removed from the case but God wants her to keep working it in a way. A pretty good Christian story.
Lies can destroy a person's life and wreck families. The suspense builds as a man tries to convince his wife and others that the monumental evidence against him is a lie. the difficulty is magnified when she discovers he had an affair he never told her about.. If he can't find the one who is spreading the lies, he will be convicted of murder. it is obvious that there is a very dangerous person behind the planted evidence and fake letters. The author weaves a very believable tale that makes one realize, this could happen to any of us. Not only is this a good read, but it gives one pause for thought.
I usually don't do reviews for books if they're negative, but this book is just awful. I'm very glad I received a free copy because I would have been horribly upset to have purchased it. The writing was very poor, editing was abysmal and the story while having great promise, was so dry. The long "thought diatribes" took so much away from the story. I read half of the book and I just couldn't finish. I really wanted to enjoy it as I love mystery/Christian fiction/suspence but this missed the mark on all aspects.
